GMU Onboarding Instructions
Welcome to GMU! Please follow these steps to get set up before starting your first semester.
It is recommended that all of the required course texts be purchased up front to ensure availability for the duration of the program.
Prepare Your Cloud Account
-
Make sure you have a Google or Microsoft account.
-
This will be used to store, share, and submit your assignments and artifacts.
File Sharing Basics
-
Upload a file (like a document or video) to your cloud drive.
-
Change the sharing settings to “View Only” for the public.
-
Copy the share link so you can easily paste it into forms and assignments.
Join GMU Discord
-
Log into Discord and join the official GMU server (link provided at registration).
-
This is where announcements, chat, and peer support happen.
Set Up Supporting Accounts
-
Create a free account at JotForm.
-
Create a free account at RPG Stack Exchange.
-
(Optional but recommended) Create a free account at Perplexity AI for research and idea creation.
Confirm You’re Already GMing
-
You should ideally be Game Mastering for at least one group.
-
If not, plan to start—active play is needed for practicum work.
Register for Semester 1
-
Create an account on the GMU learning site (start at the login page).
-
Register for the first semester. You'll receive email confirmation and portal access.
Recording Your Game Sessions
Recording sessions helps document your growth and enables portfolio building.
-
For Online Games:
-
Use free tools like OBS Studio or Discord’s Craig bot to record game audio or video. OBS can capture screen and audio from platforms like Roll20, Zoom, or Discord. Craig bot handles multi-track Discord audio. Recordings can be uploaded to your cloud drive.
-
-
For In-Person Games:
-
Place a smartphone or omnidirectional microphone (such as a Blue Yeti mic) at the center of the table to record audio. For video, a 360 camera (like GoPro MAX) works well. Move files to your cloud drive for sharing.
-
-
For Both Styles:
-
Audio-only is easier for most portfolios. Use Audacity for recording and editing audio; use video recording only if you wish to analyze play style visually.
-
Recording is recommended but not required for every session; highlight memorable moments or key practicum evidence.
You’re all set! If you need help with any step, reach out on the GMU Discord for tips and support.
