Welcome to GMU, an online, self-paced program for Game Masters who want to sharpen their craft and keep a clear record of their growth.
GMU certification is delivered entirely online, so you can work through it on your own schedule from anywhere. Lessons are short, and each one includes a quick check-for-understanding that unlocks what comes next as you move forward.
This free program is split into four self-paced 16-week semesters. The first three semesters focus on structured learning that aims to be both rigorous and enjoyable. Because it is self-paced, you can move quickly or take your time. If you want to accelerate, you can often finish sooner. The fourth semester is a practicum, where you will run a 16-week campaign in any genre you choose.
GMU is not a license to GM and it is not required to run games. Think of it as something you do while you are already behind the screen: a guided way to learn more about tabletop roleplaying, reflect on what you are doing, and deliberately improve over time.
The program draws inspiration from fields that share a similar feel to gamemastering, such as teaching, RPG video game design, acting, and theatre or drama directing. In those professions, people are expected to deliver a consistently high-quality experience. In the same spirit, GMU uses a portfolio approach built from player feedback, recorded highlight sessions, your notes, and the materials you create along the way, including adventures, encounters, denizens, house rules, and more.
As you progress, you will be evaluated on two things: your understanding of the topics and your ability to run fun, engaging, and safe TTRPG sessions. You will complete quizzes, create content, submit video evidence, and run games that demonstrate your growing skills.
For most GMs, the certification is mainly personal: something concrete to show for the time and effort spent learning, practicing, and reflecting. It can also signal to others that you have chosen to study the craft in a thoughtful, organized way.
GMU is being developed with input from experienced Game Masters who serve on an advisory and review board. They help shape the standards, expectations, and best practices that guide the program.
